The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) at IIT Jammu successfully hosted a workshop on March 19, 2025, as part of the seventh chapter of the ‘Manthan Series.’ The workshop focused on the theme of 'Social Shaping of Technology.'

The event explored the interplay between technology and society, challenging the notion that technology develops independently and subsequently molds societal structures.

Dr. Sambit Mallick from the HSS department at IIT Guwahati discussed the influence of economic, political, and cultural factors on technological innovation. He highlighted how decisions made in technology development can impact various social groups and addressed the limitations of technological determinism. He also provided examples illustrating how societal dynamics shape technological advancements.

The workshop offered valuable insights into the relationship between technology and society, helping participants understand how broader social factors influence innovation.
