Ethics of AI

This topical and crucial research project is funded by IIT Jammu, and its principal investigator is Dr Joby Varghese. It started in April 2023 and has a three-year tenure to understand the technological basis of ethics in AI.

This project recognises AI's wide and expanding impact. Therefore, it is committed to taking plural perspectives in philosophy, computer science, cognitive science, sociology, economics, law, and public policy to understand and analyse issues related to AI systems and robotics. Since the philosophical literature is relatively thin on many important topics regarding the ethics of AI and robotics, the project’s interests span from establishing the preliminary and necessary clarity on key issues, such as bias and opacity in the decisions of AI systems, to developing these debates further and with rigour.

The most critical outcome of this project would be the framing of broad ethics and principles for the design, development, and deployment of AI in India. While it will be drawing on similar global initiatives, it will be grounded in the Indian legal and regulatory context.
