HSS Organises 3 days Workshop on Mind and Ethics

Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Jammu organized a 3 - days Workshop on “ Mind and Ethics”” for the students of the institute. The program was curated to foster understanding of Mental health and Ethics among the students keeping in view the emerging rate of mental health problems in IITs .

The program was coordinated by Dr. Suchismita Roy, Visiting Faculty, Sociology, HSS. In the welcome address, Dr. Roy highlighted the schedule with emphasis on the relevance as well as the proposed goal of the workshop. Goals of the workshop were to articulate rationales for integrating ethics in participants, professional and social life - what to consider before making decisions and principles of justice, how to handle stress, anxiety, substance abuse and how to be empathetic, introduce mental health awareness while addressing the stigma on mental health issues and awareness about relevant social legislation related to confidentiality, plagiarism, ethical consent, women cell.

On the First day, Dr. Abhiruchi Chatterjee, the eminent community psychiatrist, initiated the workshop with an interactive session discussing myths around mental health and how to handle stress.The second day, Mr. SS Sharma, Asst Professor of SMVDU, focused on how to handle ethical dilemmas with a crisp introduction on ethics and critical thinking.

Prof Renuka Devi, IIM Jammu, took a session on ethics in the organisation. In this session, students learned different concepts of business ethics ,do’s and don'ts in the organisation. She also discussed Indian perspective of ethics. On the last day Dr. Bhaskar Mukherjee, psychiatrist and neuroscientist explored the relationship between neuro-science and engineering , and how the brain works and recent developments in brain research.

The concluding session of the workshop was conducted by Advocate Shakeel Ahmed, who introduced relevant social legislation to the student in simple language. He started his session with the quotes of the famous poet Ghalib.

Workshop Sessions were chaired by Dr. Gaurav A Bhaduri, Dr. Bhumika R, Ms Ishita Mahajan, Dr. Sukanya Mandal and Dr Quleen Kaur Bijral, H.o.D, HSS. The speakers were presented with mementos. More than 85 % of participants said that they would like to recommend this course to others. Students felt this course highlighted some important aspects which they don't learn in regular classes of academics. Students appreciated new concepts, open discussion about mental health issues , friendly interaction,real life examples and cases used in the workshop. The event was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Suchismita Roy. Special thanks to Psychologist Ms Akansha Joshi, Dr. Joby, and Mr Shalu, Mr Abhishek Caretaker, Mr Sunil Jamwal.
