Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering website. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the three founding departments at IIT Jammu, which was established in August 2016. As of Summer 2024, the department comprises twenty faculty members and six staff members and is home to about one hundred forty-four undergraduate students and more than sixty-five graduate students. Our students come from various states across the union of India and, thus, contribute to the department's diversity.
The department houses well-equipped laboratories, which are used for both instruction and research. Our faculty and research scholars are actively involved in research in conventional and new Mechanical Engineering areas. Additionally, we promote interdisciplinary research and collaborate with colleagues in other departments, both within the institute and outside, including those in other countries, to identify and work on research projects common to multiple branches of science and engineering. Our major thrust areas in research include Applied Mechanics, Advanced Manufacturing, Thermal Sciences, Renewable Energy, Nuclear Energy, and Compressible Flows. The department is committed to excellence in teaching, research & development and outreach related to science, engineering, technology development and policy matters related to Mechanical Engineering
