The Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT Jammu was established in 2016 and is one of the three founding departments of the Institute. The department strives to play a role in nation-building by training engineers in an effort to transform them into future leaders. We conduct translational research to enable us to surmount technological barriers so that our present and future needs are addressed. The department offers B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs. It currently has 19 faculty members, 6 staff members, and approximately 150 undergraduate students (I – IV year), 28 postgraduate students (I – II year students of Thermal and Energy Systems Engineering), and 38 Ph.D. students.
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most fundamental disciplines. A mechanical engineer is well-versed in the basic principles of dynamics, energy, and materials science and uses it to conceptualize, analyze, design and build mechanical systems that serve the interests of mankind and our planet. Hence, it is one of the most broad-ranging engineering specialities; its scope encompasses power plants and airplanes, cell phones, and biomedical equipment, to name a few. Its diversity also enables the skilled engineer to engage with other fundamental disciplines, such as physics and mathematics. In a nutshell, the discipline of mechanical engineering focuses on developing processes, systems, and products by harnessing energy and power across many scales, viz., from the nanoscale to the vast, from simple and yet elegant to complex systems. This enables its practitioners to achieve technological improvements and forge new domains.
