The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India in 2014 initiated “Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT” with an objective to enhance the number of PhDs in Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) and IT/IT Enabled Services (IT/ITES) sectors in the country.
The objective of Phase-I of Visvesvaraya PhD scheme (budget of Rs.466.00 Crores) was to support 3,000 additional PhD scholars (1,000 Full-Time + 2,000 Part-Time) in ESDM and IT / ITES sectors. Phase-II of Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for 9 years, was approved by the Government with a budget of Rs. 481.93 Crores in 2021 with an aim to support 1000 Full-Time PhD candidates, 150 Part-Time PhD candidates, 50 Young Faculty Research Fellowships and 225 Post-Doctoral Fellowships.
Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme is an institutional scheme, where PhD seats are allocated to the institutions and the institutions enroll PhD candidates on these seats following their admission procedures. Part-Time (PT) PhD seats are provisioned for professionals working at a reputed place/organisation. Under this scheme each institution in the proposal may nominate one faculty for the award for each round of call of applications for Young Faculty Research Fellowship (YFRF). Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) is provided under this scheme to support PDF fellows.
