Welcome to the Humanities and Social Sciences Department of IIT Jammu! We are a group of dynamic, dedicated and inquisitive faculty members and scholars, with diverse interests ranging from Philosophy to Literatures in English to Economics to Sociology, which is a testament to the vast potential of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We are committed to upholding an intellectually stimulating and inclusive environment where students and faculty engage with some of the most profound questions concerning human existence, psychology, society, economy, culture, and history. Our research queries and pursuits are in line with the larger vision of the Institute: to enable collaborative interventions that are humanistic, creative, and have a social impact.

The Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, IIT Jammu, is committed to suturing STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Math) into the fabric of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This endeavour is being realised through an enmeshed network of cross and trans-disciplinary courses, projects, and collaborations. The department encompasses the disciplines such as English, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Culture and Polity, and other such prospective subjects in the wide gamut of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Saloni Walia presents a paper at IIT Mandi Conference
The paper is titled “Transgender Stories: Studying Tales of
Transitioning through Online Archives” and was presented at Anusandhan 1.0,
organised by the Research Society of IIT Mandi from 23rd-25th June 2023.
Nadeem Rather publishes a paper in Literary Voice
The paper’s title is “Grandmother as a Narrator in Kanthapura- A
Critique,” and it was published in Volume 1 of the journal.

Saloni Walia gets selected for the 3rd Teachers for Trainer’s
Program at Ashoka University
She got selected for the 3rd Teachers for Trainer’s Program at the
Center for Studies in Gender and Sexuality (CSGS) at Ashoka University, held from
12th November to 4th December 2022. She also presented a demo workshop as a
facilitator on the last day titled “Navigating Gender And Sexuality in The 21st
Century.”

International Conference
The paper was titled “The Importance Of Education In Coetzee’s
Disgrace” and presented at the 9th Kuala Lumpur- International Conference on Social
Sciences and Humanities (ICSSH).
Nadeem Rather presents a paper at the University of Hyderabad
The paper titled “Digging the Freedom: A Comparative Study of ‘A
Golden Age’ and ‘How to Tell the Story of an Insurgency’” was presented at a
conference at the Central University of Hyderabad.
Saloni Walia presents a paper at the 8th JGU International Literary
Conference
The paper was titled “Gendering Caste: An Analysis Of P. Sivakami’s
Novel The Grip Of Change” and was presented at the 8th JGU International Literary
Conference (Online). The theme of the conference was ‘India in the Literary
Imaginary,’ and it was organised by the English Literary Society, O.P. Jindal Global
University, between 18th-20th July 2022.
Aditi Magotra bags mentorship at the 17th Annual Association of
Adaptation Studies Conference
She was selected for a special mentorship program to discuss the
thesis proposal under the tutelage of Prof. Thomas Leitch and Prof. Monika
Pietrzak-Franger at the 17th Annual Association of Adaptation Studies Conference.
The conference's theme was (In)visible Adaptation: Diversity and Inclusion, and it
was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from the 22nd to the 25th of June, 2022. She later
presented a research paper titled “The Transmedial Rigmarole: An Exploration of
Transmedia Storytelling in the Indian Context” at the conference.

She participated in International Virtual Writer’s Festival organised
by Cape Comorin Trust, Tamil Nadu, and won the award for her poem: “Trapped: A
Lockdown Saga.”
