Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) at IIT Jammu. The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 2018 with the intake of the first undergraduate batch. Since then the department has grown to the first batch graduating in 2021. The department is currently growing and consists of nine faculty members: assistant professors, visiting professors, and professors. With a unique combination of enthusiasm, experience, and adaptability, the department has expanded from modest beginnings to astounding new heights.

The vision of the department is “To be an epitome of excellence in chemical engineering science with a world-class multidisciplinary approach towards sustained growth in academics and research with impetus for service to society”. The department is working to reach new heights by bringing together faculty from different fields in order to accomplish this.

The department currently offers 4 year undergraduate, 2 year M.Tech program with specialization in Sustainable Energy Engineering and Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering. The also contributes in Minor in Nuclear Engineering, Minor in Bioscience and Bioengineering as well as Engineering and Scientific Computation.

The department has identified different thrust areas of research ranging from Energy and Environment to Biomedical Devices, Biochemical Engineering to Catalysis and Reactor Engineering, Modelling and Simulation to Drug Design and Delivery. Having a high level of diversity in research the department has many high-end analytical and experimental facilities. The department asserts student towards interdisciplinary research that would lead new avenues of entrepreneurship that lies in between. Identification of the gaps in the market and provide sustainable solutions to those problems by students is highly encouraged.

Currently the department has identified a few thrust areas keeping in mind regional and national interests. Chemical Engineers are currently addressing the issues of Sustainable Chemical Processing, Process Intensification, Agro-chemical processing and Carbon Free Energy Systems at multiple scales (macro, conventional and micro-nano). They explore the mega possibilities at the intersection of traditional engineering and new technologies (genomics, microfluidics, nano) using Big Data Analytics and AI Predictive Models. To take part in the 21st Century “new agro” based revolution they can exploit the rich biodiversity of Union Territories of J&K Ladakh. Entrepreneurship and enterprise are one of the major ethos of the department. These skills and this approach will help the budding Chemical Engineer to achieve path breaking careers in emerging markets.
